Breaking the Silence…word for word
When I was in high school, I worked at Dunkin Donuts. My favorite part about working there was interacting with different people and hearing their personal stories.
I especially loved chatting with the regulars, who were like old friends stopping by to say hello. But there was one person who’s story I remember the most.
I’ve been on a role with my writing lately (this past week, I sat down to write 3 days in a row, a record for me)! And I think I figured out the trick that gets me going.
A couple of weeks ago, I forgot my headphones at home on two separate (but close) occasions. I always carry a pair with me to hear music when I’m out. For an avid music lover like myself, this was pure torture.

I think one of the worst assumptions to make as a writer is to think you should only read books in the genre you are writing in. That’s like deciding you can only interact with people from your hometown.
Being creative is about not having boundaries, so you shouldn’t be afraid to think let alone read outside the box. On the other hand, it’s probably not a good idea to stop reading in your genre altogether because that is ultimately what you would like to write and it can serve as the best blueprint to get you there. I know for a fact that my creative hindrances mainly stem from fear. But not the typical fears of failing and looking like an idiot in front of other people.
